Suggested Nutrition Supplements

Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid found in the body. It is a protein building block and involved in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid. Glutamine serves as a source of fuel for cells lining the intestines and can promote healing and repair to the cells damaged by gluten. A dosage range of 1000-5000 mg of glutamine can be taken depending on the duration of gluten exposure and fecal malabsorption score.

Probiotics are defined as live bacteria that improve intestinal microbial balance and enhance health. They are the “good” or beneficial bacteria found in the gastrointestinal. A balance of “good” to “bad” bacteria can be disrupted by inflammation or toxins in the gut. To promote a healthy balance and ensure the removal of toxins created by gluten probiotics should be taken for healing and it is not a bad idea to continue taking them as they promote immune health and are lacking in our modern diets. Dosage range of at least 10 billion live, viable, organisms per gram containing; Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bifidobacteria, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus.

Digestive enzymes aid the body in digesting and breaking down proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Considering the gut may be damaged and larger fragments of food are sneaking through it is a good idea to try and enhance the breakdown of these fragments. Enzymes from either animal or vegetable sources should be taken 20 minutes before meals or snacks. Digestive enzymes when taken on an empty stomach promote healing and can reduce inflammation. Enzymes from animal origin are destroyed by low pH of the stomach acid unless they are (enterically) coated. Enzymes from microbial and plant sources work at the pH found in the upper stomach where food sits. These enzymes continue to be active in the acidic lower stomach as well as later when the food passes into the alkaline small intestine.

Anti-inflammatory herbal formula can help with reducing inflammation and promoting healing. Look for herbs like turmeric, aloe vera, ginger and boswellia.

Omega 3 fatty acids known as EPA and DHA are found in fish and fish oil supplements. These essential fats are not made by the body and must be eaten or taken in supplement form to ensure adequate supplies for the body. These fats reduce inflammation, support bone health, heart health, mental health and skin health. When these fats have been malabsorbed significant health problems may result.
